The CJ Prentiss Education Resource Center is led by a team of seasoned educators, researchers, and advocates united by a commitment to equity, access, and social justice. Collectively, they bring decades of experience across public education, higher education, social services, and grassroots community work.
Their expertise spans early childhood care, K–16 instruction, educational policy, and youth development—particularly for underserved and marginalized populations. With backgrounds in sociology, criminal justice, educational leadership, and global teaching, the team combines academic insight with hands-on experience to address systemic barriers and promote inclusive practices.
They have designed and led school reform efforts, coached educators and leaders, and developed evidence-based programs grounded in research and community needs. Their collective work focuses on empowering students, supporting families, and fostering inclusive learning environments.
Together, the team carries forward the legacy of CJ Prentiss by developing innovative, data-driven programs that transform education and create a lasting impact for students, educators, and communities across Northeast Ohio and beyond.

Michael Charney was married to CJ Prentiss for 43 years. As a Social Studies teacher in the Cleveland schools for over 30 years he worked closely with CJ to develop her transformative educational policies and vision. That vision undergirds the work of the CJ Prentiss Education Resource Center.
In his teaching Charney attempted to inspire his students to have their voices heard as they fought for justice. He received 5 creative teaching awards from the Ohio Department of Education and was chosen as the national teacher of the year by the American Federation of Teachers.
Charney was also an elected leader of the Cleveland Teachers Union and through that union work pioneered the national concept of social justice teacher unionism and co-edited two books capturing the experiences of teacher unions across the nation.
CJ and he are honored by the Zinn Education Project with their Prentiss/Charney professional development program for social justice teachers.
Now he plans for the CJ Prentiss Education Resource Center to both honor CJ but also profoundly influence the lives of students, parents, and teachers in Ashtabula.

For over 45 years, Clarice has dedicated her life to serving underserved communities, with a special focus on children, single mothers, and youth at risk.
For over 45 years, I have dedicated my life to serving underserved communities, with a particular focus on children, single mothers, and at-risk youth. My journey began in early childcare, operating in-home daycares for families in need and offering shelter to homeless mothers and their children. I’ve provided care for children of incarcerated or addicted parents, offering stability in times of crisis.
My commitment to community led me to roles at the Youth Development Center in Ashtabula and the Ohio Department of Corrections, where I held positions ranging from Victim Services Coordinator to Programs Supervisor. While earning my Master of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Cincinnati, I helped develop youth outreach programs that connected at-risk students with powerful mentorship inside correctional facilities.
Whether through youth ministry, education, or mission trips abroad, my life’s mission remains the same: to uplift, empower, and prepare young people to lead with knowledge, integrity, and purpose — creating a future filled with hope.
